2010 Allen Harbor II

A Great Rendezvous Weekend

Sailing Area: Narragansett Bay RI

Rendezvous Base: Allen Harbor, North Kingstown RI (next to Quonsett Point) 401-294-1212
Call them for information and reservations. Slips this year are at $1.50 ft/per night and moorings are $25.00 per night.  Space is definitely limited.  Some limited anchoring space is available in Allen Harbor. There is also a launching fee of $10.  There is long term parking which is free in the back field.  The Harbor office is open from 8am – 4pm.  NETS has been going here for years so be sure to mention that you are part of the sailing group.

The entrance of the harbor was dredged deeper but not wider two years ago. Deeper area is closer to the sandbar, watch depth entering and leaving harbor.

Dates: August 5-8, 2010

Regular Float Plan: - Spend Friday evening in Allen Harbor. Dinner Friday is being planned as a cookout under the pavilion. It will be a BYOF with your meat of choice and a side dish to share (email Karen Hill karenoth@myfairpoint.net with your shared dish selection). Saturday, weather permitting, we will be sailing Narragansett Bay and most likely sailing to Potter Cove on Prudence Island for the night. Sunday we will sail the bay before returning to Allen Harbor. We will be monitoring channel 69 for the rendezvous. Channel 72 has been used lately for racing events.

If spending the night at Potters Cove, be aware that all of the moorings are privately owned so anchoring is the only option. However a mooring is not required as there is seldom the kind of wind to cause drag. Also be aware that in the past the cove has been patrolled by the harbormaster.

Information, Suggestions and Optional Activities   For those going to Potter Cove there is hiking on Prudence Island as well as a nice beach.  Great place for man’s best friend to take a walk.

In the past some of the group took time on Sunday to tour the inner harbor of Wickford to see the boats before returning to Allen Harbor.  Some great sights and a great restaurant if you can find dock space.

One restaurant near Allen Harbor is Pelly’s 19th Hole 401-294-6460.

Provisions: In Allen Harbor you can get ice but no fuel or food.  A cup of coffee is $1.00.  There is the use of a pump out which is free, but you have to call the harbor master 30 minutes ahead.  There are gas stations and food available if you go north on Rt. 1 including a Dunkin Donuts and a great ICE CREAM place.  Also, if you go north on Rt. 4 to exit 1 you will find plenty of retail stores and restaurants including a West Marine.   In Potter Cove there are no provisions at all.

Ramp Details and Parking: Remember to rig at the top lot, near the maintenance building but on the rest room side of the overhead power lines, and not down by the water. WATCH the POWER LINES!! There are two ramps side by side.  At low tide the ramps tend to be a little shallow but have not proved a problem in the past.  Both sides are in good condition except for the ramp on the right where you need to stay away from the rocks.  It is well protected from wind and waves. There are docks next to the ramp which can tie up two MACS each and also docks to tie up to for loading and unloading. There is plenty of parking in the long term parking lot and cars can be left for several days. This ramp is also used heavily by fisherman in the morning and early afternoon.
